Ratchet wheel

A saw-toothed wheel that, with a click, permits rotation in only one direction.

Explanation

Found on the barrel arbor of key-wound watches and on winding mechanisms generally, the ratchet wheel holds the mainspring's tension against the click while allowing the crown or key to add further turns.
