Crown wheel

The escape wheel of a verge escapement, with teeth projecting axially like a crown.

Explanation

Paired with a foliot or balance carrying pallets, the crown wheel and verge form the oldest surviving mechanical escapement family, used from medieval turret clocks through early pocket watches.
