A spring-loaded pawl that engages a ratchet wheel to permit rotation in one direction only.

Explanation

The click and its spring stop the mainspring barrel or ratchet wheel running backwards while winding, holding the accumulated torque. A worn or broken click spring lets the mainspring 'jump back', a common bench fault.
