Click and ratchet

The pawl-and-toothed-wheel assembly that prevents the mainspring from unwinding while being wound.

Explanation

Set on the barrel or ratchet wheel, the click permits winding in one direction only. A worn or broken click spring lets the watch run down suddenly during winding, a frequent bench repair.
