Rack and snail

A striking-train mechanism that counts the hour by a rack falling against a stepped snail cam.

Explanation

Used in repeating and striking clocks and watches, the snail's stepped profile encodes the current hour so the rack falls a corresponding distance, determining the number of blows struck.
