Rack striking

A striking system using a numbered rack and snail to count the blows, tolerant of hand adjustment.

Explanation

Developed in the late seventeenth century and generally credited to Edward Barlow, rack striking lets the hands be moved without disengaging the strike train, unlike earlier count-wheel systems, and became the standard for quality striking clocks.
