Life & work
Ferdinand Berthoud was born in the Val-de-Travers, Neuchâtel, and moved to Paris, where he became one of the leading Continental makers of marine timekeepers, appointed Horloger Mécanicien du Roi et de la Marine. His marine clocks, built and tested through the 1760s–1780s, were among France's principal answers to the English chronometer tradition represented by Harrison, Arnold and Mudge.
Beyond his instrument-making, Berthoud was an important horological author, publishing extensive treatises on clock and watch theory and history that remain cited reference works, including L'Art de conduire et de régler les pendules et les montres and multi-volume works on marine timekeeping. His combination of practical instrument-making and theoretical writing gives his work unusual documentary depth compared with many contemporaries.
The Berthoud name was revived in the twenty-first century as an independent luxury watch brand (Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud) unconnected by direct lineage to the historical workshop; this encyclopedia treats the historical maker and the modern brand as distinct.
