Pivot

The reduced, polished end of an arbor or staff that runs in a bearing.

Explanation

Pivots must be round, straight and highly polished to minimise friction and wear in their jewel or plate holes; a bent, rough or undersized pivot causes poor amplitude, positional error, or a stopped movement.
