Burnishing

Polishing a metal surface, typically a pivot, by friction with a hard, smooth tool rather than an abrasive.

Explanation

A burnisher compresses and smooths the surface rather than removing much material, ideal for restoring a pivot's finish and slightly hardening its surface without significantly changing its diameter.
