Jewel hole

A pierced synthetic or natural stone bearing that a pivot runs in.

Explanation

Ruby or sapphire jewel holes reduce friction and wear compared with plain brass bushings. Higher jewel counts historically indicated (though did not guarantee) finer regulation, since jewelling the train and escapement reduces friction losses.
