Lantern pinion

A pinion built from parallel steel pins (trundles) held between two end plates rather than cut from solid steel.

Explanation

Common in older clock trains, the lantern pinion is comparatively cheap to make and runs smoothly with wheel teeth of traditional profile, though it is largely superseded by solid cut pinions in fine watch work.
