Index assembly

The pivoting arm carrying regulator pins that determine the effective active length of the hairspring.

Explanation

Moving the index toward 'fast' shortens the effective spring length and raises the rate; toward 'slow' does the reverse, though free-sprung designs dispense with the index altogether in favour of adjustable balance weights.
