Free-sprung

A balance regulated by adjusting its own weights rather than by a hairspring index.

Explanation

Without curb pins the effective hairspring length is fixed, which improves isochronism and stability but makes rate adjustment slower and strictly a watchmaker's job. Chronometers and fine modern watches are often free-sprung.
