Friction jewelling

A manufacturing method that press-fits jewels directly into the plate or bridge rather than mounting them in a screwed chaton.

Explanation

Cheaper and faster to produce than chaton-set jewels, friction jewelling became standard in mass-produced twentieth-century movements without a meaningful loss of function.
