Cap jewel

A flat jewel closing the end of a pivot hole to control endshake and hold oil.

Explanation

Also called an endstone. Cap jewels on the balance, and on escape and fourth wheels in higher grades, reduce friction and retain lubricant at the pivot end. Their presence and position are useful grade indicators.
