Fusee

A tapered grooved cone that equalises mainspring torque through a chain or gut line.

Explanation

As the mainspring runs down, the chain pulls on an increasing fusee radius, compensating for falling spring force. Fusee construction is characteristic of English watches and of quality clocks, and is a useful — though not conclusive — dating indicator.
