Cylinder escapement

A frictional-rest escapement using a slotted cylinder on the balance staff.

Explanation

Invented in the early eighteenth century and refined by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the cylinder escapement was cheaper to produce than the lever and common in nineteenth-century Swiss and French watches, though more prone to wear at the cylinder lips.
