Crossings-out

Crossings-out are the spokes cut into a wheel between rim and hub — typically four crossings in train wheels. Their number, shape and finish are clues to quality and origin: fine watches have carefully bevelled and polished crossings, while rough piercing marks cheaper work. Balance wheels and escape wheels have their own characteristic crossing patterns.
