Chapter ring

Explanation
The chapter ring is the ring carrying the hour numerals ('chapters') on a dial. On early clocks and watches it is often a separate applied ring, sometimes silvered against a matted centre. The style, width and numerals of the chapter ring help date dials; on enamel dials the chapters are painted rather than applied.
