Railroad dial (Montgomery dial)
A dial style with bold, widely spaced Arabic numerals for both hour and minute tracks, aiding rapid reading.
Explanation
Railroad dials prioritise legibility: bold Arabic numerals for every hour and, on the Montgomery dial, every minute numbered with the five-minute figures emphasised. American railroad rules from the 1890s onward effectively required such dials on watches used in service. The Montgomery layout is named after Henry S. Montgomery, a railroad watch inspector who promoted it.
