Champlevé enamel
An enamelling technique in which recesses cut into a metal surface are filled with enamel and fired.
Explanation
Distinguished from cloisonné, where the enamel is separated by applied wire cells rather than engraved recesses; both appear on higher-grade cases and dials of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
