Life & work
Thomas Tompion, often called 'the father of English clockmaking,' established a London workshop that became the most celebrated in England during his lifetime. Trained originally as a blacksmith in Bedfordshire, he moved to London and was made free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1671, subsequently building a business whose output — clocks, watches and scientific instruments — set the technical and aesthetic standard against which contemporaries were judged.
Tompion collaborated closely with scientific figures of the Royal Society, notably Robert Hooke, and his workshop produced some of the earliest English balance-spring watches following the balance-spring controversy of the 1670s. He later partnered with Edward Banger and then George Graham, his former apprentice and eventual successor, whose own achievements (see George Graham) extended the Tompion workshop tradition into the following generation.
Tompion's business was distinguished by numbered production — his workshop is credited with introducing serial numbering of watch movements as a matter of routine practice — and by an insistence on quality that made 'a Tompion' a byword for reliability. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, an honour reflecting his standing in his own time.
