Enamel (porcelain) dial

So-called porcelain dials are actually vitreous enamel: powdered glass fired onto a copper (later sometimes other metal) blank, giving a hard, glossy white surface. They do not fade or tarnish but chip and crack, especially around the centre hole and edges. Hairlines visible only under a loupe are common and should be noted in condition reports.
