Enamel (porcelain) dial

A dial of vitreous enamel fired onto a metal base.

Explanation

Hard, glossy and chemically stable, enamel dials chip and crack rather than fade. Hairlines are common and are generally accepted as honest age; filling or repainting them turns a conserved dial into a refinished one.
