Engine turning (guilloché)
A mechanically engraved decorative pattern cut into a case or dial using a rose engine or straight-line lathe.
Explanation
Popular through the nineteenth century on gold and silver cases, engine turning also provided a practical benefit, disguising handling marks better than a plain polished surface.
