Conservation

Stabilising an object and preventing further loss, in preference to renewing its material.

Explanation

Conservation stops decay — corrosion, dirt, unstable finishes — while keeping as much original material and evidence as possible. Restoration returns an object towards a former appearance, and repair returns it to work; the three aims often conflict, and the choice should be recorded rather than assumed.
