Conservation

Conservation means stabilising an object and slowing further decay while keeping as much original material and evidence as possible — cleaning, corrosion control and minimal, documented intervention. It differs from restoration (returning an object toward an earlier appearance, often replacing parts) and repair (simply making it work). For historically important horological objects, conservation-led treatment preserves value and evidence that aggressive restoration destroys.
