Hacking seconds

A mechanism that stops the balance when the crown is pulled to set the hands.

Explanation

A hacking lever presses against the balance rim or stud to halt oscillation while the time is set, allowing the seconds hand to be synchronised precisely to a time signal; it became a specified feature on many military and railroad-grade watches.
