Construction and interpretation

Railroad grade describes construction or adjustment meeting a specified time-service standard; railroad used describes the history of an individual watch. The two are not interchangeable. A high-jewel-count movement with railway-style numerals may satisfy some historical requirements, but it does not establish acceptance by a particular company or surviving inspection history. Requirements changed over time and differed by railway and jurisdiction.

For an American example, record the exact model and grade, size, jewel count, setting method, adjustment markings and case orientation. Then compare those details with a dated approval list or inspection record. Lever setting reduced the risk of accidentally moving the hands during winding, while clear dials and positional adjustment served different purposes. A replacement case or dial can obscure these distinctions even when the movement remains a genuine high-grade product.

Treat universal jewel-count or approval rules cautiously unless a dated railway specification is cited.
