Balance

The oscillating wheel that, with its spring, forms a watch's time base.

Explanation

The balance and its spring form a harmonic oscillator whose period governs the rate. Bimetallic balances compensate for temperature by flexing their rims; later monometallic balances rely on alloy hairsprings such as Elinvar instead.
