Quarter Repeater Watches
VerifiedRepeating watches that sound the hours and the nearest preceding quarter-hour on demand, the simplest and most common form of striking pocket watch.
Mechanism
Operating the slide charges a small striking train; a rack falls against a snail cam geared to the hour and quarter-hour wheels, releasing hammers to strike the appropriate count.

Construction and interpretation
A quarter repeater indicates the current hour and the completed quarter-hours within it. At 2:49 it reports two hours and three quarters, not forty-nine individual minutes. Depending on the mechanism, quarters may be sounded as single high notes or paired tones. The reading is deliberately coarser than that of a minute repeater, but the striking work remains an intricate mechanism requiring its own power supply and count control.
Quarter repeating work preceded the later refinement of minute repeating; it is not simply a modern minute repeater with parts omitted. A half-quarter repeater adds an indication that seven and a half minutes of the current quarter have elapsed. That distinction should not be rounded into an exact eight-minute interval. For identification, the sequence and relevant mechanism are stronger evidence than case decoration or the presence of two gongs alone.

Gong count alone does not identify resolution. Do not label half-quarter work as an eight-minute repeater.

The most commonly encountered repeating complication in the antiques market, though genuine working examples require specialist servicing.
