Drop

The small amount of free travel an escapement's parts have after unlocking and before the next locking contact.

Explanation

Excess drop wastes energy and causes audible or excessive impact wear on escape-wheel teeth and pallets; a timing-machine trace and direct bench inspection are both used to check that drop is minimal and even between the two pallets.
