Timing machine

A bench instrument that listens to a watch's escapement and displays rate, amplitude and beat error graphically.

Explanation

By analysing the acoustic signature of the escapement's ticks, a timing machine gives an objective, repeatable measurement that replaced the older practice of timing against a master clock by ear and stopwatch.
