Complication

Any function added to a watch beyond basic timekeeping, such as striking, calendar or chronograph work.

Explanation

The term is used loosely from a simple date function to the 'grand complication' combining perpetual calendar, minute repeater and chronograph, the traditional benchmark of technical mastery.
