The external housing that protects the movement, dial and hands from dust, moisture and physical damage.

What it does

Encloses and protects the movement while providing the means to view the dial (via the crystal) and access the crown, and in many designs to hang or carry the watch.

How it works

A case is typically built from several parts — case body (middle), bezel, crystal, case back and pendant — assembled to seal and protect the movement while allowing dial visibility and crown access.

Water-resistant cases use gaskets (rubber, later synthetic elastomers) at the case back, crystal and crown/stem junctions, plus a screw-down or snap-fit case back, to exclude moisture to varying depth ratings.

Case hallmarks, import marks and maker's marks stamped inside the case back or on the case body are important primary evidence for dating and attributing a watch, independent of the movement.

Evolution

From simple hinged, unsealed cases to fully sealed, gasketed, water-resistant cases developed through the 20th century as sports and diving watches demanded greater environmental protection.

Identification for collectors

Case hallmarks and maker's marks (often on the inside of the case back) are primary dating and attribution evidence, and can be independent of the movement's own markings
