Object description

Dial and Hands

The black dial features square luminous hour markers alongside baton quarters and a luminous triangle at the 12 o'clock position, framed by white outer minute divisions. Time is indicated by distinctive polished snowflake hour and minute hands filled with luminous material, accompanied by a sweep centre seconds hand.

Direct visual inspection shows that the luminous infill on both the dial plots and snowflake hands displays notable patination and age. Fine surface scratches are also visible across the face of the crystal.

Case Construction and Bezel

The watch features a 40 mm brushed and polished tonneau-form stainless steel case equipped with protective crown guards. It is fitted with a bi-directional rotating bezel housing a black calibrated insert with a luminous pip marking the 12 o'clock orientation.

The auctioneer reports the case serial number as 815029. The case back is stated to be a screw-down component engraved with the name 'EDWARD EARL GETTYS', containing an interior date code stamped 'IV.72'.

Movement and Mounting

Bonhams reports that the interior houses a 17-jewel Calibre 2483 self-winding automatic movement, with the case, dial, and movement all signed by Tudor. As the case back was not opened in the available photograph, movement condition, calibre stamps, and specific mechanical integrity are not recorded in this visual record.

The wristwatch is mounted on an associated blue fabric pass-through strap secured by an associated steel buckle, rather than an original Tudor bracelet or clasp.

Evidence for this section
  • “Movement: 17-jewel Cal.2483 automatic”
  • “Signed: Case, dial & movement”
  • “Strap/Bracelet: Associated blue fabric”
  • “Buckle/Clasp: Associated steel buckle”

Open research questions

  • What specific external documentation or logbooks exist to substantiate the professional diving career of Edward Earl Gettys?
  • What is the mechanical condition, service history, and finishing state of the internal Calibre 2483 movement?
  • Does the luminous material on the dial and snowflake hands test as original tritium, and does it show signs of stabilization or reluming under UV examination?
