Serial number

The factory number on a movement, used for dating and grade research.

Explanation

For several American factories published serial tables give approximate production years and grade details; for most Swiss houses dating requires a factory archive extract. Published tables are approximations built from surviving records, so a date derived from them should be given as an estimate.
