Damaskeening

Decorative machine-engraved patterning on American watch plates.

Explanation

Applied with a rotating abrasive head, damaskeening leaves circular, wave or stripe patterns that are characteristic of particular factories and grades, and so are useful in identification. The Swiss equivalent finishes are côtes de Genève and perlage.
