Wandering hours

A display in which the current hour numeral travels along an arc, indicating the minutes as it passes a fixed marker.

Explanation

An early complication attributed to Campani clocks of the seventeenth century for the Pope's bedchamber, later revived in wristwatches; three or four discs bearing the hour numerals rotate in sequence beneath a minute arc.
