Snailing

A circular, overlapping-arc decorative finish applied to wheels and plates.

Explanation

Produced by a rotating abrasive tool moved in a repeating arc across the surface, snailing (or 'sunray' graining) leaves a pattern of radiating scalloped arcs, used decoratively on ratchet wheels, crown wheels and bridges of finished movements.
