Quartz crystal (resonator)

A precisely cut piezoelectric crystal that oscillates at a stable frequency when a voltage is applied.

Explanation

Modern watch resonators are typically tuning-fork cut quartz vibrating at 32,768 Hz, a frequency chosen so a simple binary divider chain yields one pulse per second.
