Motion works

The reduction gearing beneath the dial that drives the hour hand at one-twelfth the minute hand's speed.

Explanation

Typically comprising a cannon pinion, minute wheel and hour wheel, the motion works sits between the going train and the dial side. Wear here produces hands that bind, hesitate or lose synchronisation between the two hands.
