Cannon pinion

A friction-fitted pinion on the centre wheel arbor that carries the minute hand.

Explanation

Because it is friction-driven rather than fixed, the cannon pinion allows the hands to be set without disturbing the going train. A slipping or loose cannon pinion causes hands to lag or jump and is a common source of timekeeping complaints unrelated to the escapement.
