Import mark

An assay mark applied to foreign gold and silver cases on entry to a market.

Explanation

British import marks, used from 1876 and revised in 1904, indicate a case made abroad and assayed on arrival; they are common on Swiss watches sold in Britain. They record entry and standard, nothing about the movement's grade.
