Crown gasket

The rubber or synthetic seal within a crown that maintains water resistance around the winding stem.

Explanation

The crown gasket is the small synthetic seal inside the crown (and at the stem tube) that keeps water and dust out of a water-resistant case. Gaskets age, flatten and perish, so water resistance is not permanent: it should be tested periodically and gaskets renewed at service, especially before any swimming with the watch.
