Cuvette
VerifiedAn inner protective cover, usually hinged or snap-fitted, fitted over the movement inside a pocket watch case, beneath the outer case back.
What it does
Shields the movement from dust and handling damage when the outer case back is opened, and in hunter-case watches, protects the movement between the outer cover and the works.
How it works
The cuvette is typically hinged along one edge so it swings open to expose the movement for winding (in key-wound watches) or servicing, then closes to shield the works when not in use.
In many pocket watches it also carries engraved information such as the watch's serial number, jeweling count, or maker's details, serving a documentary as well as protective function.
Some cuvettes are further engine-turned or engraved as decoration, reflecting the case-maker's or retailer's standard of finish.
Evolution
Cuvettes were near-universal in quality pocket watch case-making; the fitting declined in relevance with the near-disappearance of pocket watches as everyday timepieces through the 20th century, though it persists in some traditional and dress pocket watches.
