Openwork enamel watch · France (case, catalogued); Vienna (movement signature)
Openwork floral enamel watch with later Caille movement
Partially verifiedThe gold exterior is constructed as flowers and foliage decorated with opaque and basse-taille enamel. The museum dates the enamelled exterior to 1650–1670 and the movement to 1750–1775. Its silver chapter ring, blued steel hand and engraved dial belong to the preserved assembled object; they should not all be assigned the exterior’s seventeenth-century date.

Historical significance
- The gold exterior is constructed as flowers and foliage decorated with opaque and basse-taille enamel. The museum dates the enamelled exterior to 1650–1670 and the movement to 1750–1775. Its silver chapter ring, blued steel hand and engraved dial belong to the preserved assembled object; they should not all be assigned the exterior’s seventeenth-century date.
- The institution describes an inner gold case with evidence of changed fixing arrangements and a late eighteenth-century verge movement signed Samuel François Caille à Vienne. It proposes one interpretation in which the earlier decorated case was fitted with the later movement in nineteenth-century Vienna. This assembly history is a hypothesis, not an established dated transaction.
- The enamel case resembles another V&A watch, M.371-1910, whose inner gold work bears the mark of Josef Weichberger senior and a Vienna mark in use from 1872. The museum asks whether copying or a common earlier source explains the resemblance. This record does not resolve that question or claim that M.33-2018 bears Weichberger’s mark. The museum also notes some restoration to the floral case.
- Current operation, service history and public display have not been verified. Conservation comes before restoration and repair; a qualified specialist should assess the object before opening, winding or intervention.
