Barrel cover (barrel lid)

The removable lid closing a going barrel, retaining the mainspring and its arbor.

Explanation

Held by friction or a bayonet fit, the barrel cover must be correctly seated so the barrel teeth run true and the mainspring is fully enclosed; a loose or dented cover can bind on the barrel bridge or let the spring escape during service.
