Equation of time

The varying difference between apparent solar time and mean (clock) time through the year.

Explanation

Caused by the earth's elliptical orbit and axial tilt, the difference reaches roughly plus or minus a quarter hour; equation clocks and some complicated watches display it via a kidney-shaped cam.
