Collection and display status

The distinction between an institution holding an object and exhibiting it now.

Explanation

A watch in an online museum collection is not necessarily in a public gallery. It may be in storage, on loan, undergoing conservation or available only by appointment. Cite the collection record for holdings, but check a current official visitor or gallery page for exhibition claims. Even a catalogue's old ‘on view’ statement can change. For a planned visit, ask the museum about the exact accession number and date of your visit; do not assume a research enquiry grants access to stored objects.
