Cock (balance cock)
A single-footed bridge, usually pierced and engraved, supporting the balance staff's upper pivot.
Explanation
Because it is removed for cleaning and oiling, the balance cock is a natural place for engraving, piercing and, on higher-grade work, jewelling and swan-neck regulation.
