Crown Tube (Winding Stem Tube)

A threaded metal tube fitted through the case band at the pendant, through which the winding stem passes to connect the crown to the movement.

What it does

Provides a rigid, precisely located passage for the winding stem through the case wall and, in water-resistant watches, a seat for sealing gaskets that keep moisture out around the stem.

How it works

The crown tube is fixed into a hole in the case band, positioned so the winding stem can pass through it and engage the keyless work inside; a case shoulder or step keeps the tube correctly aligned with the movement's stem hole.

In water-resistant designs, one or more rubber or synthetic gaskets sit within or around the crown tube, compressed by the crown when screwed or pushed home, forming a seal against moisture and dust ingress at what is otherwise one of the case's more vulnerable openings.

A cracked, stripped or corroded crown tube is a common cause of failed water resistance even when the crown and its own gasket are in good condition, since the tube provides the mating surface the gasket seals against.

Evolution

Became progressively more refined alongside the development of screw-down crowns and water-resistant cases through the twentieth century, from a simple unsealed passage in early keyless watches to a precision-fitted, gasket-sealing component in modern sports and dive watches.

Identification for collectors

Visible as the small cylindrical fitting at the pendant through which the stem and crown pass
A loose, wobbling crown or stem often indicates a worn or damaged crown tube rather than a fault in the crown itself
Crown and tube threads must match in pitch and diameter; cross-threading a screw-down crown damages the tube, which then has to be replaced
